The purpose of the SAU Health Parity Pilot Grant is to fund projects that focus on innovative approaches to: recruitment of trainees at the medical student, resident, or fellowship level with intent to reflect the patient populations whom we serve; promotion of innovative mentorship strategies to foster the success of such applicants; recruitment of urology residency graduates with a special interest in health parity into academics; and retention and promotion of urologists with a special interest in health parity within academic institutions and institutional leadership.

The Society of Academic Urologists (SAU) was formed in 2016 when the membership of both the Society of University Urologists and the Society of Urology Chairpersons and Program Directors combined to create the Society of Academic Urologists. Funds from the urology residency programs support this organization and are used to develop projects that will allow academic faculty to meet the requirements of residency education or to improve the method of residency education today.

The SAU developed a standing committee for the Recruitment and Retention in 2020 with a mission of identifying innovative ways to develop, disseminate, and implement best practices that promote health parity. With the above in mind, SAU is now accepting proposals to fund projects that will serve this purpose. We anticipate that these projects will be applicable to most urology residency programs and have a broad appeal to program directors and department leadership trying to enhance the quality of resident and medical student education by promoting health parity at all levels of academic urology. Proposed projects should be designed so that they can be completed within two (2) years and priority scoring will be assigned to those projects which will deliver a tangible product that will be available to all program directors and chairpersons within the organization. First time awardees and new investigators are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must be faculty at a member institution in good standing.

Budget requests should be for amounts up to $10,000. Funds will not cover any indirect or overhead costs. Partial funding may be awarded. Payments to the successful grant will be split between two installments pending demonstration of successful progress of research. The grantee is to submit a headshot/passport photo of the principal investigator(s), a progress report of work accomplished during the current and future funding period(s), including goals and objectives achieved, list of abstracts, publications, and educational products generated from the research, and plans for the next funding period (for multi- year grants). This report will be due four (4) weeks prior to the next Annual AUA meeting, where the grantee will be asked to prepare a five minute presentation. An additional final grant report and abstract will be due at the conclusion of the entire granting period. If funding is accepted, the Principal Investigator(s) grants SAU permission to publish the abstract on its website or in any media determined by SAU.
