SAU Supports AAMC and ABU Statements on Police Brutality and Racism in America

posted: June 04, 2020

The SAU strongly supports statements from both the AAMC and ABU on police brutality and racism in America and acknowledges the impact of structural racism in all of its forms on members of our society, communities, and our nation as a whole. We condemn any and all forms of racism.

We understand our responsibility to listen, learn, and act in order to implement change. As both urologists and academicians, we have the responsibility to train the future leaders of our field in a supportive and educational environment. How trainees grow and eventually lead our field forward is a direct reflection of the lessons we impart on them. Now is the time for us to listen to those willing to speak, support those willing to take action, and learn from the experiences of those willing to share. Even for those who may not say anything, they may be dealing with very strong reactions to what is happening around us these days that require our support and understanding.

The protests represent a changing point in our nation’s history and hopefully we can move together towards a more equitable and fair society.
