Announcing the Society of Academic Urologists!

posted: September 30, 2016

At the recent 2016 Annual Meeting at the AUA, the membership of both the Society of University Urologists and the Society of Urology Chairpersons and Program Directors voted to approve the formation of Society of Academic Urologists (SAU).

The SAU will assume the activities of both the SUCPD and the SUU. The decision to combine the activities of SUCPD and SUU resulted from a number of issues. First, the SUU was formed as a 501c3 and SUCPD as a 501c6 corporation; this resulted in one organization having significant reserves to accomplish their mission and the other having very little. Second, both Societies have held parallel educational meetings for the last five years. Third, there was some question of overlap of the two groups from the AUA, RRC, ABU and others.

The formation of the SAU presents solutions to these issues. As a 501c6 organization, the SAU will continue to raise money and collect dues to create a benefit for members. This new organization will be more able to meet the needs of all academic faculty, and allow for clearer communication with the AUA, RRC, ABU and other societies. Additionally, combining the two organizations will help maximize the ROI for academic programs, as the SAU will now run the Program Directors meeting that was previously under the AUA purview.

The new officers of the SAU are a combination of the SUU and SUCPD previous officers.

  • President - Stephen Y. Nakada, MD, FACS
  • President Elect - Byron D. Joyner, MD, MPA
  • Secretary - Louis R. Kavoussi, MD
  • Treasurer - Mitchell Benson, MD
  • Past President - Douglas A. Canning, MD

There are several board and committee positions that will be filled in the next few weeks-look for an announcement requesting those interested to submit their names.

Furthermore, because the SUU still has some funds, the SUU will remain as a shell organization, which will be dormant with no membership but will contribute to the educational mission of the new SAU over the next 5 years until the funds are depleted. The SUCPD will become the SAU, and will assume the educational activities of both organizations. The officers of the SAU will oversee the SUU and its funds.

Membership will remain institutional, and membership dues will remain the same ($1,000) as previously with SUCPD. SUU members will become SAU members through their affiliation with their institution. Note that the SUCPD membership dues cycle was semiannual starting July 1st, and will change to calendar year with SAU starting in 2017. Thus, all members will receive a dues invoice for half the dues rate ($500) for the last 6 months of 2016. Dues will resume at the full year rate ($1,000) in January for 2017.

This is a very exciting time--we will be keeping all membership informed of the development over the coming weeks. We will have our new email and website soon and will send an announcement to both memberships.

If you have any questions or concerns about this exciting development, please contact Stephen Nakada, President, at nakada@urology.wisc.edu or Pam Murphy, Executive Director, at pam@wjweiser.com.
